Rainer ZIPPERLING - Baroque Cello, Viola da Gamba
Rainer grew up in a musician/actress family and started playing cello at the age of 7.
After finishing school he studied Violoncello and Viola da Gamba at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, the world - famous institution for baroque music. Finishing his studies in 1980 he joined groups like the Orchestra of the 18th century or La Petite Bande, the Ricercar Consort and Camerata Köln. Most of these ensembles he is still working with. At the same time he started a career as a soloist, editor and recording engineer, mainly for his own record company FLORA, which he founded together with the belgian gambist Philippe Pierlot and the violin player Francois Fernandez. He performed with John Eliot Gardiner and the “English Baroque Soloists” as principal cellist and gambist, worked together with Claudio Abbado and his Mozart Orchestra and is member of the Orchestra of the 18th century since more than 30 years. Since he is a great admirer of Japan, he loves playing with such eminent ensembles like the „Bach Collegium Japan“ and „Orchestra Libera Classica“ founded by his colleague and friend Hidemi Suzuki. (Hidemi and Rainer share the same birthday!!!)
Today he has a highly estimated reputation as a teacher at the Conservatory of Cologne and the Lemmensinstitut in Leuven/Belgium. He gave masterclasses throughout the whole world like USA, Portugal, Israel, Korea, Australia, Russia etc. and supports the development of historical performance practice in Taiwan where he tours regularly.
He recorded the Bach Suites for Violoncello Solo which were praised in the press for his vivid and spontaneous interpretation . Recently the recording of Marais’ 5th book was released; as well as the Bach gamba sonatas with Rainer’s transcription of the b-minor sonata for flute.
Both Cd’s were highly acclaimed.
His latest recordings of Couperin and Forqueray compositions and the Fantasias for solo-viol of Telemann got the highest marks.
With Camerata Köln he recorded lately the complete work of Hotteterre, chamber music of C.P.E.Bach and concerti by J.M. Leclair. Camerata Köln will celebrate its 40th birthday in 2019 ........
He is a fanatic mountain-biker crossing the alps every year, he loves excellent wines and food . His two daughters also play music, as well his wife, who lately started making jewels.
